Sponsor a Chair
We have recently launched our sponsorship opportunity for members of our congregation and supporters. Our new folding chairs will be used in our already busy cathedral which hosts many special services and artistic and musical events as well as the regular pattern of worship found in all cathedrals. Unfortunately, our present chairs are old, ill matched, uncomfortable and most significantly a fire risk and as the Cathedral’s facilities are renewed it has become necessary to replace them.
We are also giving people the chance to add a plaque to the chair they sponsor; which is an opportunity to celebrate the life of a loved one, or commemorate a special event or anniversary
The cost of a chair is £150 (the cost of a plaque, which is an opportunity to celebrate the life of a loved one or a special event or anniversary, is an additional £10).
The Chapter have selected the Treske St Nicholas folding chair to compliment the style of the Treske benches which will be used to complete the refurbishments.
The new chairs are made in oak, use traditional mortise and tenon joints and most importantly are very comfortable. This strong and hardwearing chair can be linked to other chairs, is simple to use and easily set out or stored.
Different heights of people will find the chair comfortable due to the shaped split backrest and the rush seat. When not in use the chairs can be folded flat and stored away quickly on the purpose built trolleys.
The Dean of Newcastle comments:
“Our busy Cathedral needs to be flexible to host the many different events and services. It is at the heart of the community and a meeting place for everyone but our current chairs are uncomfortable and detract from the beauty of the cathedral. The new chairs will be both practical and flexible and will greatly enhance the appearance of the nave. This is a marvellous opportunity for everyone to have a stake in the future of this great historic building”
A tradition of furniture-making has endured in North Yorkshire where traditional craft skills have been kept alive. Treske is part of that legacy, making commissions for specialist church furniture and seating, as well as domestic furniture and bespoke handmade kitchens. All are welcome to see the Treske work at our workshops and showrooms in Thirsk. Many examples of church commissions are shown on the Treske website.
