About Strathclyde University Chamber Choir

Formed in 1980 under the direction of Alan Tavener, and comprising students and staff from Strathclyde University, as well as singers from the wider community in the West of Scotland, the Strathclyde University Chamber Choir has a repertoire ranging from plainsong and renaissance music to 20th century and contemporary pieces. In addition to regular Easter holiday visits to all the great northern English cathedrals, the choir sings occasional services in Glasgow and its environs, and gives two or three concerts a year, as well as undertaking various fundraising events. The choir has championed the work of several young composers, including Toby Young, Alan Craig and Emily Crossland, and has had a long-standing relationship with Sir James MacMillan, for whose son’s wedding in 2018 it was honoured to provide the music. It has also been broadcast on Radios 3, 4 and 2. While in Newcastle the choir will be giving an informal concert to young patients at the Great North Children’s Hospital.
