Vacancy for Dean of Newcastle Cathedral

Newcastle Cathedral (the most northerly Cathedral in England) is the seat of the Bishop of Newcastle, supporting her mission, teaching and pastoral ministry across the diocese. With a significant Heritage Lottery Fund project underway that will enhance the Cathedral’s ability to serve the city, this is an exciting time for a new Dean to lead the Cathedral community in re-articulating the vision for the Cathedral’s ministry as we look forward to a new phase of spiritual and numerical growth.

From the Bishop

“Newcastle Cathedral has been a significant sacred space in the City of Newcastle since it was completed in 1350 and since the 15th century its lantern tower has been a uniquely recognisable feature of the riverscape. The cathedral honours and records in its monuments the mercantile and maritime history of the City, including Admiral Lord Collingwood and Roger Thornton, merchant and three times Lord Mayor of Newcastle.

The Cathedral is now working towards a significant new phase of its life in the City with the award of a Stage 1 HLF grant for an ambitious and exciting project “Common Ground in Sacred Space” which will significantly enhance the Cathedral’s ability to serve the city.

There is much that is hopeful and encouraging and this is an opportune time for the next Dean to join us in “growing church bringing hope” – our vision for the whole of the Diocese of Newcastle, for each parish, community and chaplaincy. It is, I hope, an energising exciting vision, and I look forward to our new Dean, as a member of the Bishop’s Staff Team, supporting the development of “growing church bringing hope” across the diocese, as well as working with the Cathedral community to develop their contribution to the vision.” +Christine Hardman, Bishop of Newcastle
