Job Title: Head Verger
Location: Newcastle Cathedral, Newcastle upon Tyne
Responsible to: Director of Operations
Contract: Permanent with an initial probation period of six months.
Hours: 40 hours per week based on a flexible working pattern (annualised hours of 2,080 per year) with the requirement of being on call during regular overnight periods
Salary: £21,000 per annum. The post comes with rent-free accommodation in the form of a three bedroom townhouse adjacent to the Cathedral
Newcastle Cathedral has a vacancy for an experienced Head Verger to lead the verging team at an exciting time in the Cathedral’s development. We are looking for a hard-working, enthusiastic individual who will help us ensure the Cathedral is a safe, welcoming and beautifully-presented building which meets the needs of a wide range of stakeholders.
The Head Verger will be a motivated, self-starter leading the practical day-to-day running of the Cathedral. They will be responsible for managing the team of Assistant Verger, Vestry Assistant and Honorary Vergers as well as working with key staff and clergy to ensure the busy life of the Cathedral runs smoothly. A key part of this is ensuring the liturgical life of the Cathedral is executed to the highest standards, including preparation of and participation in services as well as regular special events and concerts.
They will be a crucial member of the Cathedral team and will play a major part in supporting the development of the Cathedral into an exciting future, with the Common Ground in Sacred Space HLF project enabling the Cathedral to expand its range of worship, community activities and commercial events.
Applicants must be a communicant member of the Church of England (or a church in communion with it) and must be in sympathy with the aims and objectives of the Cathedral, getting to grips quickly with its vision and values. They should be able to demonstrate our values of integrity, generosity and compassion as well as being physically fit, with demonstrable skills and experience in facilities management (including security/fire systems and maintenance contracts).
The Head Verger will be (or demonstrate a willingness to be) trained in a relevant Health and Safety qualification (such as IOSHH or NEBOSH) and have (or willing to achieve) First Aid qualifications. They are expected to demonstrate the highest levels of working practices and to shape the vergers team likewise.
The post-holder is expected to oversee the duty rota making sure that the Cathedral is staffed from during all opening hours. They will demonstrate flair in this task, managing the team to create a safe and welcoming space at all times.
We want our Head Verger to love and care for the Cathedral. They will be required to live in the accommodation provided by the Cathedral and will be expected to be part of the Cathedral community.
There is a Genuine Occupational Requirement (GOR) that the Head Verger will be a communicant member of the Church of England or a church in communion with it.

An offer of employment is made subject to a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check and a confidential safeguarding declaration. If the post-holder does not already have first aid/Health and Safety qualifications they will be required to undertake these within the first six months (paid for by the Cathedral).

References will usually be taken up prior to interview.
Candidates invited for interview will be asked to undertake a practical assessment as well as interview. They will be able to meet Cathedral staff and volunteers informally as well as to view the Head Verger’s house.
