Services at Newcastle Cathedral
All are welcome at any of our services.
There is a regular rhythm to the Cathedral’s weekly and daily round of worship based on a traditional monastic pattern, with additional services at major festivals and on civic and national occasions. Music in the Anglican Choral tradition plays a significant part in the Cathedral’s worship; in term time there is usually one ‘Sung’ service each day (except Wednesdays and Saturdays).
The Sung Eucharist
10:00 am Sundays
This is the principal service of the week, when the Cathedral community gathers together around the altar to celebrate the Holy Communion, recalling the Last Supper which Jesus shared with his friends on the night before he died, in which he told them to break bread together and to share the cup of wine in remembrance of him. Hymns are sung, in term time the Choir sings a setting of parts of the service, there are bible readings, a sermon and prayers before we share the sacrament together. Mainly modern language is used. This service lasts approximately 75 minutes.
4:00 pm Sundays during term time
5:30 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during term time
The Cathedral Choir (or sometimes a visiting Choir) takes the principal part in this service, in which Psalms are sung, two readings are taken from the bible, the Song of Mary (Magnificat), the Song of Simeon (Nunc dimittis) and an anthem are sung, and prayers offered. The congregation is invited to listen and let the music lift up the heart to God. The traditional language of the Book of Common Prayer is used. This service lasts between 40 minutes (weekdays) to 1 hour (Sundays).
7:30 am Mondays – Fridays, 8:30 am Saturdays and Sundays
This is a quiet reflective service of psalms, bible readings and prayers. Modern language is used. It lasts 20-30 minutes.
5:30 pm Fridays (also Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays out of term; 4:00 pm Sundays out of term)
This is a quiet reflective service of psalms, bible readings and prayers. Modern language is used, except on Sunday evenings out of term. It lasts 20-30 minutes.
8:00 am Mondays – Fridays, 9:00 am Saturdays; also 8:00 am Sundays (Book of Common Prayer), Wednesdays 10:30 am, and Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:30 pm
Again this is a said service, quiet and reflective. As at the Sung Eucharist, there are bible readings and prayers before we share the sacrament, recalling the Last Supper. This service is in modern language, except at 8:00 am on Sundays when the traditional Book of Common Prayer is used. These services last about 30 minutes.
